Dear Parents/Guardians,


I am pleased that your child is in my class this year.  With your encouragement, your child will participate in and enjoy many new and rewarding experiences this academic year.


My expectations for conduct and academic standards are high.  I have developed a classroom discipline plan, which guides every student to make good decisions about his or her behavior.  It is also important for you to be aware of daily and or weekly activities that are in my classroom.  Therefore, my classroom routines and procedures are written below.  In addition, you insight into grading procedures for the class.

Discipline Plan


Classroom Rules:


  1. Be Prepared

  2. Be Prompt

  3. Be Polite

  4. Be Positive


  • In addition, students are expected to follow all school rules that are outlined in the student agenda book.


Positive Recognition:


To encourage students to follow these classroom rules, I will recognize appropriate behavior with the following: praise (daily), “good news” notes and phone calls home, special privileges, free homework passes, awards, tangible rewards, and fun classroom activities.


The blocks will be competing against each other for an end of the nine week reward.  Throughout the nine week period, students will earn points daily by meeting all daily expectations:  completing homework, performing well on assessments, good behavior, etc.  The winning block will receive a reward to be voted on by the class at the end of the nine weeks.  


A leader will be chosen from each block on a monthly basis to be the classroom leader.  The student will receive special privileges in the classroom as well as being a “class helper” or “assistant”.  The leader will be chosen by the following qualities:  respectful, organized, enthusiastic, pro-active, consistent, cooperative, compassionate, and resourceful.  A student can be picked for more than one month.


Consequences:


If a student chooses to break a rule, however, the following steps will be taken:


1st Offense: Verbal Warning

2nd Offense: Student completes “My Action Plan”/ conferences with teacher

3rd Offense: Phone call home

4th Offense: Conference with parents/guardians and administration

5th Offense: Send to principal/assistant principal with referral to office


Severe Disruption:


If a student chooses to display abusive, obscene, or disrespectful language, steal, threaten, harass, or intimidate others, fight, vandalize, bring a weapon to school or act dangerously toward themselves or others the child will automatically be sent to the principal/assistant principal and receive a phone call home.

  • 1 Package of Loose Leaf Lined Paper (3- hole punched)

  • At least 1 book (novel or nonfiction) that can be read independently in which the students are expected to have at all times in school

Textbook Policy:


All textbooks must be covered.  


Chromebook Policy:


Chromebooks are to be charged each evening and brought to class everyday. The chromebooks are to be used for academics. Throughout the year we will be incorporating the chromebooks into class activities and assignments.


Homework Policy:


Homework will be given on the first day of each week and due on Thursday of that same week.  The amount of homework will be consistent each week.  Homework will be collected and graded based on completion.  Homework is 10% of the overall grade for language arts.


Grading Policy:


The student’s grade will consist of the following:


Tests – 50%

Quizzes – 30%

Classwork – 10%

Homework – 10%


All assignments are due on the given due dates.  Students will be assigned academic detentions during lunch to complete any missing assignments.  If not completed during that time period, then points will be deducted.  Periodically, progress reports of the student’s current grade will be sent home for parent review and signature.

Assignments, homework, and additional hand-outs will be posted on google classroom.  Check the online grading system for a current grade.


Fire Drill/Assemblies:


Students are to line up quietly inside the room and will be led out the doors by the teacher.  Students must remain in line and quiet while the teacher is taking attendance.  Those students who talk, get out of line, or act inappropriately in any other way during a fire drill or assembly will be disciplined according to school policy.


Absent Policy:


Class attendance is extremely important.  If, for some reason, a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to make up the work missed in an orderly and timely fashion.  Adhere to the following guidelines to complete missed work:


  • Assignments and handouts will be located in the classroom in the appropriate make-up work folder or bin.  It is the student’s responsibility to retrieve these items when they return to school.

  • Students will be given two days from the time they return to make up missed work, including tests and quizzes.  

  • A prolonged absence will allow a student an extension and be handled on an individual basis.

  • If a student has a scheduled absence, he/she will be expected to make up the work upon his/her return (i.e. athletic events, vacation, field trips, etc.).


Portfolios:


Students will be keeping portfolios in language arts.  Their portfolios will consist of a well-rounded selection of work including tests, quizzes, projects, writings, etc.  These portfolios are expected to stay in the classroom.  A student may take them home overnight to show parent/guardian, but they must be returned the next day.


Accelerated Reader:


Accelerated Reader will be taking place during the assigned library class.  The school librarian will monitor Accelerated Reader points and share this information with the language arts teacher.  A quarterly grade will be given for accelerated points within the language arts grade.
