Commencement Procedures Released on June 18, 2020.

Class of 2020 Families:

On Friday, June 5, we asked for your opinions about three possible commencement ceremonies on Friday, June 26 in the green phase of Governor Tom Wolf’s Process to Reopen Pennsylvania Plan. All of these plans would stay under the 250 people limit for any gathering in Pennsylvania. Those options were:

Option A: An outdoor ceremony at Eagle Stadium with the entire Class of 2020 (approximately 150 students) but no spectators, as we could not evenly distribute tickets to each graduate and remain under the large gathering restriction (250 people). We would plan to live-stream the ceremony.

Option B: Two separate outdoor ceremonies at Eagle Stadium (on the same day) based on a student’s homeroom (homerooms at South Park High School are assigned alphabetically). Approximately 75 students will be recognized at each ceremony. Each student will be given two spectator tickets (an additional 150 people). We would plan to live-stream both ceremonies.

Option C: Individual graduate recognition outdoors at Eagle Stadium. A graduate would arrive at Eagle Stadium at a specific time, accompanied by family, and would walk across the field as his/her name is announced.

Each graduate and each parent/guardian had the opportunity to cast one vote. Several individuals voted numerous times, and those subsequent votes were not counted. In total, 205 votes were cast. The results of the survey were:

Option A - 65 votes (31.7%)

Option B - 104 votes (50.7%)

Option C - 36 votes (17.6%)

Option A - 27 votes (34.6%)

Option B - 39 votes (50%)

Option C - 12 votes (15.4%)

Option A - 38 votes (29.9%)

Option B - 65 votes (51.2%)

Option C - 24 votes (18.9%)

Therefore, the South Park School District will conduct two commencement ceremonies based on a student’s homeroom (homerooms are assigned alphabetically) on Friday, June 26 at Eagle Stadium. The first ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. The second ceremony will be held at 8 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremonies will be held on Saturday, June 27. If the ceremonies are held on Saturday, the first ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. The second ceremony will be held at noon. Each graduate will receive two spectator tickets.

The breakdown of homerooms by ceremony is:

Ceremony 1 - Homerooms of Miller, Hecht, and Schemm

Ceremony 2 - Homerooms of McCaig, Chounet, and Duggan

Students whose homerooms were in the TV studio or student activity center should report to the ceremony of their normal high school homeroom.

The district plans to live-stream both ceremonies.

Additional details including practice dates and times, ceremony details, and procedures are currently being finalized and will be shared with you as soon as possible.

We are looking forward to hosting these in-person ceremonies to honor our graduates.
