On a spectacular late October evening in South Park, alumni from the past six decades gathered to celebrate the final game at Eagle Stadium before a renovation project. But the enthusiasm started days before the final kickoff.
On Monday, October 24, WPXI-TV named Yough vs. South Park as a nominee for Skylights Game of the Week and the South Park High School Marching Band as a nominee for the Skylights Band of the Week. Several other larger schools were also nominated, but the support for South Park was strong from the very beginning. South Park won the game of the week race with more than 10,000 votes. That was nearly 4,000 votes more than the closest competitor. The South Park High School Marching Band became band of the week with more than 33,000 votes. That was nearly 8,000 votes more than the closest competitor.
The End of an Era evening began with a tailgate at the district administration parking lot. More than 200 people enjoyed food prepared by the South Park School District cafeteria staff and watched performances by the South Park High School Cheerleaders, Marching Band, Color Guard, Majorettes and The District band. Fans were able to play cornhole on boards built by South Park High School students, and kids of all ages lined up to have their faces painted by South Park High School students.
During a special pregame ceremony, the South Park School District welcomed alumni who played or performed at Eagle Stadium back onto the field as a way to celebrate the history of the stadium. At halftime, South Park High School state champions who played at Eagle Stadium were recognized. Representatives from the 1997 football team, 2005 football team, 2005 boys’ soccer team, 2006 boys’ soccer team and 2007 girls’ soccer team participated in the halftime ceremony.
The Eagles football team closed out Eagle Stadium with a 41-14 victory over Yough, securing a spot in the WPIAL Playoffs. After the game, the team, cheerleaders, fans and alumni gathered on the field to hear the South Park High School Marching Band perform the South Park Alma Mater a final time at Eagle Stadium.
The district will soon launch a dedicated section of its website detailing the stadium renovation project and its progress.
