This year, South Park Middle School art teacher Allison Watkins has founded the South Park Middle School Mural Club. The club’s aim is to work collaboratively with teachers, students, artists and community members to create public pieces of artwork within South Park and surrounding areas. The club will provide an opportunity for positive community involvement for middle school students and will help to unify the community through the arts, thus creating a sense of pride and arts appreciation within South Park and surrounding areas.

Currently, South Park School District Mural Club special project members are working on a mural for Deborah’s School of Dance in Fredericktown. Led by their teacher Ms. Watkins, eighth grade students Molly Blum, Elliot Oliphant, Delaney Price, Madison Scherer and Erica Thomas have been volunteering their time on nights and weekends to create a mural for the dance studio. Deborah’s School of Dance owner Deborah Gilpin encourages her dance students to value all aspects of the arts, and her commission of the mural is just one way she achieves that.

The South Park School District Mural Club plans to work to continue improving South Park and surrounding communities through the arts.
